Barbara Kruger is one of the world’s distinctive and provocative artists, best known for her hybridized mass-media and text collages.
In 1970s New York, Barbara Kruger began her career in the advertising world. Shortly after she would change professional directions, dedicating herself to art making with an emphasis on cultural critique.
Her early (now iconic) collages combined provocative, and often cynical declaratory statements of, text atop glossy images that seemed to be appropriated from magazines or American advertising.
"I shop therefore I am" is one of Barbara Kruger's most recognizable works and stands as a paradigm of her signature style. Like many texts featured in Kruger's works, the slogan is a blaring critique of an aspect of modern society or power structure, in this case, capitalism.
Given that this unique print is on the ultimate consumer item, a shopping bag, the viewer is confronted with a powerful statement on consumption and identity.
In 2005, she was awarded the "Leone d'Oro" for lifetime achievement by the Venice Biennale.
In 2010, Kruger completed one of her largest public commissions when she covered the Frank Gehry-designed facade of the Art Gallery of Ontario with her signature slogans.
Her work can be found in every major museum's collection around the world.
Her text-based works are iconic and unforgettable. "I shop therefore I am" from 1990 is one of her most memorable and iconic text-based works.
